Lawyer Samson Lardy Anyenini has condemned the disregard for the President’s social distancing directives during the installation of new Akuapemhene on May 1, 2020, at Akropong in the Eastern Region.
The installation of the new paramount chief saw a jubilant crowd thronging the streets of Akropong as the new Akuapemhene, guarded by state security personnel, was being outdoored.
According to Samson Anyenini who is also host of Joy News’ current affairs programme, Newsfile, state security personnel at the event had clearly been protecting a breach of the President’s lawful orders against public gatherings and the people of Akuapem had been put in danger as social distancing was not observed.
He said, such a blatant disregard for the law sets a bad precedent for other Ghanaians and demonstrates some double standards for the police, who had earlier arrested violators of the President’s orders.
“What do all these acts smacking of impunity and disregard for law and administration of justice ordinarily communicate to the ordinary citizen?
“The police who arrested violators, got some paying hefty monetary fines and some in jailed, how will it explain its subsequent actions to the over 400 citizens it is prosecuting?
“Will the President or Government deal with the latest violation by merely condemning it,” he quizzed.
He has, therefore, called for stringent sanctions to be meted out to the violators as Ghana’s Constitution in article 17 declares that “all persons shall be equal before the law.”
