A former Communications Minister has advised the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to take up the initiative to solicit support to aid its work in the absence of government resources.
Dr Edward Omane Boamah says he is confused as to why the Commission still suffers to secure funding to discharge their duty in educating the public.
“Emergency situations call for urgent actions...¢8 billion has become available to government for the management of Covid-19, so I'm still wondering why the NCCE is suffering,"
“It looks as if government has a certain lethargy towards spending in certain critical areas when it comes to Covid -19. You cannot ignore NCCE,” he told Kojo Yankson, host of Joy FM's Super Morning Show.
His comments come after the NCCE revealed prevalent financial challenges hampered their work.
Chairperson of the Commission, Josephine Nkrumah, recently said that their allocation to satellite districts across the country for anti-coronavirus education campaign is a paltry ¢100.
Lamenting such a development, the former Minister admonished the outfit to make do with the little resource it at its disposal to create educational material as demanded of them in the meantime.
“While they wait for this funding, they should do more. They should partner the news outlets if government will not resource them. They should engage the private media to translate their messages.”
Dr Omane Boamah also called on government to release funds to the Commission responsible for the education of Ghanaians on civic matters.
