The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has condemned the actions of MP for Awutu Senya East who fired a gun at a voters’ registration centre at Kasoa in the Central Region.
Admitting to the act, Mavis Hawa Koomson defended her decision to carry a firearm saying 'my police escort had not started work yet. So that is a mechanism I have adopted in his absence.'
The Special Development Initiatives Minister further explained that she went to the location because she heard her opponent had bused people from other places to the venue.
“I realised the lives of my people were in danger. So I wanted to scare the people. I fired the warning shots. I didn't direct it at anybody,” she told Adom News.
But speaking on PM Express, the Project Manager for CODEO Rhoda Osei Afful expressed her displeasure towards the act describing it as disturbing and unfortunate.
She also lamented the unwillingness of some party executives to go through the appropriate mechanisms to air their grievances during electoral processes. According to Ms Osei, this creates room for violence to fester.
“We understand the need for political parties to be vigilant about the process but at the same time vigilance must be conducted within the framework of law.
"So we cannot just resort to all manner of means just because we want to protect our interest. This is quite selfish and very much against the interest of the country and I feel we all must condemn this in the strongest possible terms,” she told Evans Mensah.
She also called on the security agencies to exhibit swiftness in getting to the bottom of the development.
Meanwhile, the Central Regional Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with voter registration disturbances in Kasoa.
The suspects, Sulley Razak, Majeed Amadu, Suleman Yusuf and Razak Musa have been provisionally charged with disruption of the process, discharge of firearm without authority and causing unlawful damage.
