Central Region Minister Kwamena Duncan has defended government’s decision to construct an airport and a harbour at Cape Coast.
This comes after some experts and economic analysts said the promise by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to construct an airport in Cape Cost does not make economic sense.
According to the critics, the traditional routes plied by motorists are dotted with bustling economic activities which could dwindle if this project is to materialise.
However, in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story Monday, the Minister stated that the two major infrastructural projects will impact the lives of citizens in the region and boost the national economy.
“Everything justifies the need for an airport and habour in Cape Coast. This particular promise has become a key topic since we launched the manifesto, what it means is that it is capitalising what the people of the region need.
“So me, I am happy as a Minister that the party has committed itself to construct a habour and an airport for my region in their second tenure this particular promise that comes at a good time to resolve some of the major transportation challenge in the central region,” he noted.
Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia at the launch of the party’s Election 2020 manifesto, disclosed that the NPP will construct an airport and a habour in the Central Region.
“For the people of Cape Coast, I have good news for you. We are building a new harbour in Cape Coast and a new airport in Cape Coast,” he said.
Touching on the habour, although Mr Duncan did not know whether its going to be a fishing habour or a general habour, he was optimistic that the benefit of the habour will be economically beneficial to citizens of the region.
He noted, “Look, five or 10 years from now, we will reap enormous benefits from these projects that people are criticizing today.”
However, on the same show, an Aviation Expert, Dr Yakubu Akparibo insisted that the construction of an airport at Cape Coast is not feasible.
For him, several factors including economic, safety and recreational, have to be considered and for all these features, Cape Coast falls short.
