The opposition National Democratic Congress in Asawase hesitated to sign the Regional Peace agreement pact with the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to ensure peace in that constituency.
In an interview with JoyNews, the Party said its delay was borne out of mistrust for the police and Electoral Commission.
The Party’s Treasurer, Faisal Dauda points to a National Security operative brandishing a gun at a registration centre in an attempt to prevent some people from registering as one of the issues.
Parts of the constituency witnessed pockets of unrests during the Electoral Commission’s voter registration exercise.
This caused the Peace Council to engage the NDC and NPP at a meeting on Monday to find a lasting solution to the recurring political tension in the area.
But the NDC had issues with unresolved security matters.

After deliberations the peace document was left idle for more than thirty minutes after the NPP had signed its part.
Within the period, the NDC party executives were seen consulting among themselves.
Early on, police had committed to neutrality in all matters.
But the NDC took entrenched stance that police had failed to address during the voter registration exercise.
After minutes of deliberations the NDC agreed to sign the pact with a condition that the police ensure peaceful elections and the Electoral Commission stays neutral.
Chairman of the National Peace Council, Prof. Emmanuel Asante said the council will do more to ensure peace is maintained in the constituency.
