A 37-year-old suspected robber has been assaulted by unknown people at Aboagyekrom, a suburb of Obuasi East District in the Ashanti Region.
The suspect, known as Mahmud Abubakar who is currently in critical condition, sustained several cutlass wounds on his leg and other parts of his body.
Reports suggest Mr Abubakar might have robbed some people resulting in the assault.
Some residents who spoke to JoyNews said the suspect is not a resident and therefore cannot be attacked for nothing.
They accused Mr Abubakar of being part of a group of notorious guys who rob residents in the area.
But the suspect told JoyNews he came from Kwabrafoso to meet his friend who was returning from Akatekyireso between 2 am and 3 am on Thursday but he was assaulted by a group of men who mistook him for a robber.
Assemblymember for the area, Jibril Jalil said the incident was brought to his attention at about 8 am on Thursday.
"I called the police but they did not assist me with a vehicle so I rushed to the scene to organise 'Aboboya' to carry him to the hospital."
Though the area is not known for such criminal activities, Mr. Jibril said measures have been put in place to provide security for residents.
"I have been going round with my boys in the night," he added.
He believed the suspect was not butchered in his electoral area further explaining the incident happened elsewhere and the suspect found his way to the community.
Meanwhile, Mr Abubakar is currently receiving medical treatment at the Obuasi Government Hospital.
