A member of the Covid-19 management team at the University of Ghana Medical Centre fears a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic may hit Ghana.

Dr Chris Owoo told Mamavi Owusu-Aboagye on the AM Show that the second wave is a repercussion of the failure of citizens to comply with safety protocols amidst the pandemic.

The Ghana Health Service survey revealed that the high compliance rate with mask-wearing across the country had fallen alarmingly from 44.3 per cent to five per cent.

Dr Owoo said the law must be enforced and perpetrators should be punished to serve as a deterrent to others.

According to him, there is a need for strict measures in battling out the virus, “if not we are going to have a worse pandemic than the first time.”

President Akufo-Addo addressing the nation in a televised broadcast on Sunday said an average of 130 new cases is recorded in a day for the past two weeks.

This has gotten many health officials worried and concerned.

Also speaking on the show, a community health specialist, Prof Alfred Yawson said authorities and leaders should reaffirm steps in curbing the situation to prevent another lockdown.

“What we need to do is to take the bull by the horn...let us see the police arrest people and get them to do community service by cleaning and picking up things and show it on national television so that people will know that not wearing the mask comes with consequences,” he added.

The number of active cases of the novel coronavirus in the country has risen to 1,329.

No new deaths have been recorded leaving the figure at 320.
