Some Political watchers have hinted that the decision by former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu to resign from his position may to some extent affect the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s electoral fortunes in the upcoming general elections.

Political Marketing Lecturer and Analyst, Dr. Kobby Mensah in an interview on Joy FM’s Newsnight Tuesday explained that the people who voted for NPP based on their promise to tackle corruption will be disappointed and saddened by the way the Akufo-Addo government handles corruption-related issues.

According to the Lecturer, President Akufo-Addo has been lackadaisical when it comes to rigorously handling corruption activities involving some of his appointees.

Citing a few alleged corrupt activities including the missing excavators and Number 12 documentary which involved Kwesi Nyantekyi, Dr. Mensah said the President has not handled the issues as expected.

“If you analyze the people who actually brought this government into power, it includes the Coalition of Anti-corruption voters who believed the then candidate's promise to eradicate corruption and the Coalition of Working Class who loved policies like the Free SHS and the 1D 1F.

“But looking at things now, I wouldn’t be far from right to suggest that the Coalition of Anti-corruption voters are saddened and disappointed with the President’s handling of corrupt issues,” he stated.

Dr Mensah then stressed that the establishement of the Office of the Special Prosecutor is one of the “cardinal” achievement of President Akufo-Addo, therefore, if the appointee has resigned and also made some problematic revelation about the office then it crumbles the incorruptible image the NPP couched for the President.

 Martin Amidu on Monday tendered in a letter to resign from his post as Special Prosecutor following his appointment in 2018.

According Mr Amidu, President Akufo-Addo is attempting to make him a “poodle” of his government and since he [Amidu] is an honourable man and a person of integrity he will refuse to let himself be compromise by partisan influence.

The President after 24 hours of receiving the letter has accepted the resignation of Mr Amidu, popularly known as Citizen Vigilante.

Mr Amidu’s resignation has generated a widespread public reaction, with some accusing the Special Prosecutor of running away from his duties whilst others call on the President to resign.
