Running mate to the flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Dr. Divine Ayivor says his party, when voted into power, will allocate 15 percent of the country’s GDP to remodeling the educational sector.
According to him, the move is geared at correcting disparities and bridging the gap between quality of education in rural and urban areas.
Dr. Ayivor stated on Wednesday during a political parties debate on Education Policy at the UDS Multipurpose Auditorium in Tamale that education is a human right that cannot be denied to anyone irrespective of status.
He noted the need for teachers to be provided with requisite conditions of service in the discharge of their duties.
“We are coming to look at the teachers who have been promised that their reward is in heaven and let them know that their reward in right here on earth in Ghana.
"We will make sure our teachers who are posted in rural areas live as comfortably as those in the urban areas,” he said.
Dr. Ayivor added that the PNC, as compared to other political parties, is committed to implementing better educational policies, as well as abolishing certain conventional programmes.
"We will eliminate that examination that they have to take now for licensure because the school they attended are government schools with government curriculum. So there is no need for exams for licensure so that they can concentrate on teaching our children," he said.
The debate was between four political parties; the Convention People's Party (CPP), represented by running mate, Professor Emmanuel Bobobee, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), represented by MP for Mion Constituency, Dr. Ahmed Alhassan, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), represented by Bosomtwe MP, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and the People's National Convention.
