There are lingering questions as to whether citizens in the yet to be created Guan constituency in the Oti Region will have representation in the 8th Parliament.
On December 6, a day before the election, the Electoral Commission released a statement indicating that the citizens within that enclave will vote only in the presidential election pending the creation of a new constituency for them.
Nearly 2 weeks after the election, the Electoral Commission is yet to come out with modalities spelling out how people in that Constituency will be represented in Parliament.
Both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have raised concerns about the issue.
According to a member of the NDC legal team, Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, the Electoral Commission must either create the new constituency or allow them to vote to be part of the existing constituency.
“Until we have a Member of Parliament for the Guan constituency, we should not go ahead with the selection or election of a Speaker. Doing so, will greatly undermine the right of representation [against the people of the Guan constituency],” he said.
However, NPP’s Director of Communications in the Oti Region, Seidu Musa believes the Electoral Commission understands the issue better and must be given the latitude to deal with it.
He stressed that the Commission is currently engaging with relevant stakeholders and in due time decisions made will be made known to the public.
