Two persons have been arrested by the Northern Regional police command for alleged child trafficking.
The suspects Kwaku Manu, aged 45, and Joshua Nkabeye, aged 24, both natives of Zabzugu were transporting 11 children and one male adult from Zambugu district to Kumasi.
The police intercepted the bus in which they were carrying the victims after some vigilant residents of Tamale accosted them.
According to the Northern Region Crime Officer, Superintendent Bernard Baba Ananga, preliminary investigations shows the suspects recruited the children between the ages of 9 and 20.
The children, he stated, would have been sent to Kumasi, then, moved to some remote villages in the Western North Region to work on cocoa farms.
He revealed the residents of Tamale had noticed the alleged traffickers, when their bus with registration number As 2430-15 made a stop at about 7 pm to buy food.
Superintendent Ananga said a police officer who was monitoring the ensuing tussle between the suspects and the civilians called for police intervention and a team of investigators who moved to effect the arrest.
He revealed that the team rescued the 11 children and 20-year-old male adult who are currently being housed at the police guest house.
The Regional Crime Officer said the suspects are in custody assisting the police with investigations.
Superintendent Ananga added that efforts are also being made to get the relatives of the victims from Zabzugu to assist the police with investigations.
