The Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA) is calling for the passage of a Law to explicitly prohibit the activities of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queers (LGBTQ+) in Ghana.

The Northern Union Mission of the SDA Church described the LGBTQI+ and their activities as a curse that must be stopped.

There seems to be public confusion over the legitimacy of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer rights in Ghana following the opening of a community space for the group's activities in Accra.

Advocates for LGBTQ+ rights have argued that the country’s laws do not provide a clear-cut legislation against their activities despite its criminalisation of unnatural carnal knowledge within the jurisdiction.

To this end, the President for the Northern Ghana Union Mission of SDA Ghana wants lawmakers to initiate explicit legislation to put the ambiguity to rest.

"There should be a law in the country. But I think they have understood our intentions. That is why they need to frame a law protecting the nation," he said.

According to Dr Kwame Kwanin Boakye "homosexuality and lesbianism are satanic, a curse, and should be opposed."

"We pledge our support for the government to fight against homosexual activities in the country," he added.

The newly-opened Accra Office of LGBT Rights Ghana was shut down on Wednesday by some national security operatives and the landlord following public uproar citing contraventions to the country's laws, culture and beliefs.

The SDA Church joins a cross-section of Ghanaians and numerous faith-based groups demanding the government's position on the development.

The others include the National Collation of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values, the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC), the National Chief Imam and the National Peace Council.
