Amos Addai scored an injury-time penalty as AshantiGold condemned Hearts of Oak to thier first defeat under coach Samuel Boadu on Saturday.
The Miners captain beat goalkeeper Ben Mensah from 12 yards to secure a 1-0 win at the Len Clay Stadium.
The defeat is the first for the Phobians under the guidance of Boadu, who has been dragged to the GFA by his former club Medeama over breach of contract.
Hearts squandered their best chance in the first half as they missed a penalty. Their penalty expert Victor Aidoo saw his poor kick saved by Kofi Mensah.
But Ashgold made no mistake when they were awarded theirs in the closing stages of the game. Addai scored to tale the Miners up to eighth on the table.
Hearts of Oak could drop out of the top four at the end of matchday 19.
In the other match played on Saturday, Liberty Professionals ended their poor run with a 4-0 victory against Elmina Sharks in Sogakope.
