The University of Mines and Technology is starting an initiative dubbed ‘Catch Them Young” to help curb illegal mining activities in mineral-rich communities across Ghana.
The initiative which was announced by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Richard Amankwah is aimed at training young people in mineral rich communities about responsible and sustainable mining activities, as well as the broad implications of illegal mining.
According to the VC, the programme will be taught in schools in all mining areas to prepare the next generation of artisanal and small scale mining to be responsible.
Prof. Amankwah said this when the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abdulai Jinapor paid a courtesy call on the University as part of his three-day working visit to the Western Region.
Thus people caught engaging in illegal activities in these red-zones will be sanctioned by the law.
“That enforcement regime should have no respect for political coloration, it should have no respect for status in society which is why the broad based multi-sectorial approach which is involving all the political parties in the call of our society to respect the mining laws of our country.
“And I as a minister am making clear that the President is giving the instruction that law enforcement agency, the regional minister has been told, all the regional security councils have been told, there should be no respect for political coloration…if you flout the law the full rigours of the law will be applied” he said.
