The task of representing one’s school at the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) competition can be daunting for many contestants especially with all eyes watching.
This nightmare was lived by a contestant of Drobo Senior High School, Daniel Bissiw, on Tuesday’s regional contest in the Bono-Ahafo zone.
According to him in an interview with JoyNews’ Manuel Koranteng, the mere presence of the crowd left him powerless as fear took over his physical and mental state during the first round of the contest.
His predicament was felt on the scoreboard as Drobo SHS with 12 points failed to subdue Wenchi Methodist SHS, who, by securing 14 points led the pack in Round One.

However, Daniel Bissiw says with a word of prayer, a silent one he emphasized, turned his darkness into light and brought hope for Drobo Senior High School in the subsequent rounds.
“Nothing was disturbing me but at the beginning, it was the crowd that was putting much fear on me. But when we finished the first round, I was able to overcome that. I just prayed. I prayed silently to the Almighty and he did that,” he narrated.
Following this divine intervention, Drobo Senior High School right from Round Two through to Round Four, dominated the contest and emerged victorious with 39 points to secure a slot in the 2021 NSMQ National Championship expected to commence in October this year.

After their victory, the cheerful contestants indicated that they would put things in their rightful places in order to make them a formidable force to reckon with in this year’s competition.
“We are very excited, more than excited and we will put things well in order to prepare for the next contest in the national competition,” they said.
In the Bono Ahafo-Region, Drobo Senior High School and Kintampo SHS have so far progressed to the next stage of the NSMQ contest.
