Indiana Pacers center, Amida Brimah has described the feeling of grabbing his first career NBA points, during this year's regular season of the NBA as a ‘great’ one.
The Ghanaian who signed a two-way deal with the Indiana Pacers from the NBA G-League’s Fort Wayne Mad Ants, recorded the first points of his NBA career from a floater, in what was just his second appearance in the top flight.
The 6ft center reveals that he had wild intentions, despite settling for the floater.
“It was great. TJ was the one that passed me the ball. He passed me the ball, I could have dunked it but I was like you know, ‘this is my first pass in the game, my first basket, let me just put it in. Let’s make sure it goes in’ [laughs] and I kinda like just dropped it in. But it was a great, great feeling, finally getting my first NBA points,” he said in a team interview.
The center now playing in the NBA, missed out on the 2017 NBA draft and spent two separate preseason stints with the San Antonio Spurs. He later found a spot with the Pacers in 2019, albeit for only preseason.
He was waived but once again made the Pacers team ahead of preseason, and for a second time, still couldn’t break into the team. He later joined Fort Wayne Mad Ants, where he produced very productive performances the Ants.
On April 23, ESPN reported that the Pacers had signed the Ghanaian on a two-way deal.
Brimah indicates that the move was one which took him by surprise.
“I got the call from my agent on my way to get a new phone actually. I was going to the mall to get a new phone and he calls me and was like, 'welcome to the NBA'. I was driving, I was overwhelmed. I mean I didn't think he was joking - he wouldn't joke with something like that but I couldn't believe it,” Brimah confessed.
Despite the surprise, the Pacers center reckons that the opportunity was one he was always working towards, and that despite the setbacks, he always believed in himself.
“I was really close to be honest, I was thinking about what other options I was going to, cos I had kinda given it everything. Four years I played in the G-league and going through injuries and stuff, then that call came. To be honest I didn't kind of give up, cos I knew what my potential was and how hard I worked so whenever an opportunity came I going to be ready so even though the g-league season was over, I kept working out and putting in the work just so whenever the opportunity came, I'll be ready,” he added.
Prior to signing for the Pacers, Brimah was still going through rehab from a career-threatening ACL injury, and the center believes the solidarity shown him by Indiana Pacers throughout the period of his rehab, was one he drew inspiration from.
“I think that was a big part through my whole injury, just having the whole Pacers organization supporting me, making sure I was good and all. To be honest, they believing in me actually gave me an opportunity to end up playing on an NBA team. It was a huge part of my journey,” he ended.
In an interview with Joy Sports earlier on, Brimah indicated signing with the Pacers was a deal which makes a lot of sense, since making his return on the back of an injury, it was only the Indiana Pacers – parent club to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, who knew his actual worth.
“The only team that knew how good I am will be the Pacers because nobody knows how good I am because if you want to call me based off what I did in the bubble, I don’t think I did enough to be called up. I was around 85% and not my full percent at that point but when I went back home, I started feeling like I’m getting back to my normal self, even better than my normal self, jumping higher and moving really good. So I was like all I’m waiting for right now is an opportunity,” he told Joy Sports only a few days after his move to the Pacers.
