District Chief Executive for Adansi Akrofuom, Maurice Jonas Woode joined the Member of Parliament for the area, Alex Blackson to plant over 9000 trees in the area.
The planting exercise, which forms part of Green Ghana initiative introduced by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is aimed at replenishing Ghana’s depleted forest cover.
At least, 5 million trees are expected to be planted nationwide.
Mr. Woode revealed that the District has taken delivery of 9000 seedlings made up of different tree species and 3000 oil palm seedlings on degraded mining lands especially in Akrofuom.
He also announced the assembly is partnering the Adansi Progressive Association (APA) to plant bamboo seedlings along the banks of River Jimi.
Member of Parliament for Akrofuom, Alex Blankson commended President Akufo-Addo for the project, which he believes will help tackle climate change due to depletion of forest.
Whilst bemoaning the rate of destruction caused to forest cover especially through illegal mining, he is hopeful the Green Ghana Project will help restore depleted forest. Traditional leaders, heads of department, Forestry Commission and other stakeholders took part in the tree planting exercise.
