Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey says she is hopeful that Ghana’s two-year appointment as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council will help facilitate homegrown solutions on conflict and peacebuilding on the continent.
The General Assembly of the United Nations elected Ghana to serve on that position for the period between January 2022 to December 2023.
Speaking at a media briefing today, she mentioned that the position will allow Ghana to ‘advance stronger and deeper collaboration between UN bodies to ensure coordinated actions and burden-sharing and provide financial support.
Enumerating other benefits Ghana would gain includes pushing for the African voice to be represented in global matters, especially on equitable access to vaccines and women and youth's engagement in sustaining peace.
Ultimately, the Foreign Minister believed Ghana’s example in resolving conflicts would be emulated by other countries.
Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey also highlighted challenges encountered in getting Sputnik V vaccines to buy from Russia.
According to her, engagements with the Russian ambassador to Ghana on the matter is yet to yield results.
She also gave details about the ECOWAS summit, which starts on Tuesday in Accra with a prime focus on addressing humanitarian situations and threat to security on the continent.
There will also be two other ordinary meetings.
First, the 46th meeting of ECOWAS mediation and Secretariat Council and the 86th ECOWAS council of ministered meeting, all geared towards improving African welfare.
