The Minority Caucus in Parliament has accused Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa of reckless diplomacy after the United States announced an indefinite pause on immigrant visa processing for Ghanaians.
The emergency press conference was held on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, delivered by Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, Deputy Ranking Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, on behalf of the caucus.
Speaking to the media, Nana Asafo-Adjei said, “This visa freeze is not just a bureaucratic issue. It directly affects families who have waited years to reunite, and professionals whose careers depend on lawful migration. Our citizens are now paying the price for reckless diplomacy.”
He added, “The Foreign Minister has chosen theatre over strategy. Public confrontations and social media rebuttals cannot replace careful engagement with our most important allies. Ghana has been humiliated on the global stage because of this approach.”
Highlighting the economic implications, he noted, “We are talking about billions of dollars in remittances annually, money that feeds families, funds education, and supports businesses. This freeze threatens that lifeline and the livelihoods of millions of Ghanaians.”
The Minority concluded, warning that President Mahama must act urgently to hold the Foreign Minister accountable.
“We cannot allow this pattern of incompetence to continue. Ghanaian families, our reputation, and economic stability are all at stake,” Nana Asafo-Adjei stressed.
