The Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Murtala Mohammed has noted that the Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong does not deserve the title ‘honourable’ because of his “reckless” utterances among other actions.
According to him, although it is possible for one to err, people with the title must note that “you are given that title because you are expected to behave a certain way.”
“For you to be honourable, you are expected to be absolutely honourable to be addressed as such,” he said.
His comment comes on the back of a video, circulating on social media, of Mr Agyapong speaking on his television station, Net 2 TV, as he verbally abused and threatened to attack Luv FMs’ journalist, Erastus Asare Donkor, for the journalistic work that he undertook during the recent shootings and killing incident at Ejura.
In the video, which circulated on Friday, July 9, Mr Agyapong, who is also the chairman of Parliament’s Defense Committee, siad, if he were the President of Ghana, he would have ensured that the journalist, is beaten mercilessly.
Murtala Mohammed, who was commenting on Mr Agyapong's utterances on Prime Morning on Joy Prime TV, said, “one of the reasons why I have insisted I don’t want to be addressed as honourable, is because the conduct of some of the so-called honourable members are absolutely dishonourable.”
“There is no any pride in wanting to be associated with that title looking at such conduct. To be very honest with you,” he told Daniel Dadzie.
The Assin Central MP’s action has become of grave concern as it was not the first. One may recall similar comments he made which led to the murder of an investigative journalist, Ahmed Hussein Suale on January 16, 2019.
The Tamale Central MP noted that Mr Agyapong’s uncontrolled actions “are becoming too many.”
He said people should know that one is addressed as honourable only when the person is a Member in Parliament, “when you leave Parliament, you are no longer an honourable.”
“In this country, someone contested for assemblyman and lost, he is honourable, someone who is no longer in Parliament, he is honourable,” he said on Thursday.
Following the threat, the Multimedia Group in the letter dated July 13, 2021, filed a formal complaint and requested a thorough investigation into the threats issued by the legislator.
Speaker Alban Bagbin on Wednesday, therefore, referred Kennedy Ohene Agyapong to the Privileges Committee of Parliament for instigating attacks against the journalist.
The directive will enable the House to decide if the actions of Mr Agyapong breach the orders of Parliament and if so, recommend appropriate sanctions.
Mr Mohammed noted that under the fourth republican constitution, Mr Agyapong has been dragged before the privileges committee than any member of the House.
“Tell me whether he has any competitor as far as Parliament or MPs are concerned in this country with regards to such recklessness, he doesn’t.”
