Boxer Samuel Takyi has ended Ghana’s nearly three decades wait for an Olympic medal with a tenacious performance against Colombia’s David Avila Ceiber in the featherweight fight in Tokyo.
The 20 year old Ghanaian staged a stunning comeback to secure a 3-2 split decision victory in the early hours of Sunday.
The Ghanains trailed his opponent on all the judge’s scorecards going into the last round but he rallied to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against the two-time Olympian.
The victory means Takyi is guaranteed a bronze medal but that can change to a guaranteed silver if he beats American Duke Ragan in the semifinal matchup on Tuesday.
