The Ministry of Youth and Sports has clarified that boxer, Samuel Takyi, has already received $10,000 out of the $20,000 promised him by President Akufo-Addo after he won bronze at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

The remaining half of the money, the ministry explained in a statement, will only be given to the 22-year-old after he presents a "good personal development plan."

The ministry's statement is on the back of reports that the boxer refused to participate in the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic boxing qualifying event in Dakar, if the $20,000, as well as an Olympic scholarship, were not given him.

In 2021, Takyi ended Ghana's 29-year wait for an Olympic medal when he secured bronze in Tokyo.

After his feat, Akufo-Addo announced that the Atukpai native would be given a car, $10,000 in cash, plus a further $20,000 to be put in a fund towards his future career development.

According to the Sports Ministry, Takyi was handed both the $10,000 cash, as well as a Nissan Sunny saloon car also valued at $20,000 on 18th November, 2021.

Again, out of the $20,000 earmarked for his development, the ministry said Takyi came for $5000 on 16th December 2022, and most recently, another $5000 on 27th July, 2023, which the boxer claimed was meant to prepare him for the Paris 2024 Olympic qualifiers.

"This implies that out of the $20,000 meant for his personal development, a balance of $10,000 is now payable to him when he presents a good personal development plan," the statement concluded.

The ministry also insisted in parts of the statement that Samuel Takyi remains a member of the Black Bombers team preparing for the qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal, from 9-15 September, 2023.

The Black Bombers coach, Ofori Asare, is currently in camp with 16 boxers, including UK-based Seth Gyimah, popular known as Freezy McBones, out of which 12 will be taken to Senegal looking to secure qualification in five weight divisions.
