Veteran sports journalist Karl Tufuoh has described Abedi Pele’s performance at the 1992 Afcon in Senegal as the greatest individual performance in the tournament’s history.
Ghana lost 10-11 on penalties to neighbors Ivory Coast in a marathon shootout in a tournament many tipped the Black Stars to win.
Abedi who was captain of the Black Stars scored in the group stage against Zambia and also netted crucial goals in the quarter and semifinals against Congo and Nigeria respectively.
Karl Tufouh believes the only comparable individual performance in a major tournament is Diego Maradona’s 1986 world cup winning performance with Argentina.
“I have never seen a player dominate a tournament so much like Abedi did, at least for the Africa nations cup” “Look at the goals that he scored against Zambia-Phenomenal.
Despite getting Ghana to the final, the ‘maestro’ missed the decider due to suspension after picking up a second booking in the semifinal game against Nigeria. Karl Tufuoh is adamant Ghana would have won the tournament if Abedi had played in the final.
“Pele was absolutely here, there and everywhere and that is why it had been Otto Phister, Bukhard Ziese or C.K Gyamfi Ghana would have won without a doubt. It wouldn’t have ended in a goalless draw and proceeded to penalty shootout. We would have found a way to win”.
Abedi Pele ended the tournament as the best player despite sitting out the final.
