The Ghana Federation of Disability Organization (GFD) is appealing to transport unions to help sensitize drivers on the need to respect pedestrians using the White Cane.
They believe such education will reduce the fear of vehicular knockdown of the visually impaired.
The Federation of Disability Organization laments most drivers in Ghana are ignorant of what the white cane represents.

President of the group, Alfred Tabi Amponsah, bemoaned the lack of respect for the white cane, which makes it easy for the visually impaired to navigate with ease.
“The white cane is like the third eye for the visually impaired because it helps us to perform our daily activities but drivers don’t know its essence. When a pedestrian shows the white cane, drivers should slow down and stop for the individual to cross,” he advised.

Meanwhile, the Calvary Charismatic Church (CCC) has donated 100 technology-assisted white canes to the Ghana Federation of Disability Organization.

Head Pastor, Ransford Obeng, promised to donate to the organization yearly to support the visually-impaired in the Ashanti Region.

“Last year we donated 200 canes to the organization and we’re giving out 100 this year, but this is not the end. This time the cane has special features, it helps them to detect where there’s an object or danger when they’re walking,” he said.
Members of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organization expressed gratitude for the gesture.
