Youth from communities in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region stormed the premises of Asanko Mines to petition the company over Social Responsibility Fund (SRF), employment and other issues of concern.
According to the youth, the company promised to fund corporate social responsibility projects across 23 communities but failed to honour its promise.
They also claim the mining company has not fulfilled its commitment to employ 60% of the youth and construct major roads in the area.
The residents took their concerns to the premises of Asanko Mines.
According to them, four years have passed since Asanko Mines broke its pledge.
Youth Leader of the communities, Peter Awere said, "The agreement was to give us 2 dollars per ounce. But we haven't received a pesewa from Asanko Gold Mines"
The residents have given the mining company a 3-week ultimatum to address their concerns.
The young people also say the company has denied them the opportunity to visit their farms, leaving them financially stranded.
The aggrieved youth petitioned the mining company to have their concerns addressed.
Head of Security, health and safety at Asanko Mines, Nana Amoako says management will look into their concerns and respond accordingly
Meanwhile, District Chief Executive for Amansie South District, Clement Opoku Gyamfi who also received a petition from the youth promised to direct their concerns to the Ashanti Regional Minister.
