The Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs is the latest group to join people calling for legislation against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) activities in the country.
On Saturday, Vice President of the House, King Odaifio Wulentsi VI, underscored that under no circumstances will the traditional leaders accept the respect the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.
Delivering a welcome address when President Akufo-Addo paid a courtesy call on them, King Wulentsi asked for the Legislature and the Executive to work amicably to ensure the passage of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, popularly known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
“We want to use this opportunity to voice out our displeasure of accepting people indulging people on same-sex marriage. As fathers of the land, we have monitored the social and public discus, and we want to add our voice that this practice will not be entertained or tolerated among our people.
“Mr President, all eyes and ears are now looking up to you for you to do the needful to help save humanity,” he said.
The Chiefs also appealed for the region’s name to be changed from Greater Accra to Ga-Dangbe Region.
On his part, President Akufo Addo was optimistic that Parliament will tread the right path in deliberating on the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
He, however, wants to house to address 26 outstanding chieftaincy issues in the region.
In August, eight parliamentarians jointly submitted a private bill to push for the criminalisation of LGBTQ+ activities in the country.
The proponents also want the promotion, advocacy, funding, and acts of homosexuality to be forbidden in the country.
Since the controversial bill was made public, opposers have argued that should it be passed into law, it will violate the fundamental human rights of individuals who identify with the group.
The bill is currently with the Parliamentary Committee that has since called on citizens to submit documents stating their positions on the bill.
