The Ministry of Education has reiterated its commitment to technical and vocational training in the country.
The Ministry says it will be investing another $200 million into Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the country, just as it did in 2020.
Last year’s $200m investment was approved by Parliament to support the government’s Jobs and Skills Project.
If this is additional $200m investment is realised, government would have spent nearly $1 million into TVET since 2017.
Delivering an address on behalf of the Sector Minister at Friday’s closing ceremony for the 2021 WorldSkills Ghana National Competition, Chief Director at the Education Ministry, Benjamin Gyasi, said that the $200 million investment would also be supporting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises in the country.
“Government has committed over $700m to revamp and transform TVET over the last four years. It is also committing an additional $200m through the jobs and skills project to ensure there is quality in TVET delivery as well as to support MSMEs through the Commission for TVET and the Ghana Enterprise Agencies,” he announced.
In the meantime, Benjamin Gyasi said that the government was “retooling the entire educational sector, making TVET a central pillar, starting from the basic schools.”
According to him, technical institutions at the second cycle level are having facelifts, and the whole of TVETS are being transformed.”
The government also commended technical and vocational students for their efforts in Ghana’s fight against COVID-19.
He said that the country’s ability to “produce enough nose masks, for all citizens to reduce the spread of the virus significantly” was worthy of recognition.
