Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has said that the increase in population in the various cities in the country has exposed the poor nature of physical planning.
He pointed to overcrowding in city centres as a major problem caused by improper planning of cities, especially the Kumasi Metropolis.
To him, demand for accommodation and other economic activities has led to indiscriminate building of structures, creating congestion in cities.
“Today, the population continues to increase, you find kiosks everywhere. Why are we not able to plan for the increasing population so that we can properly locate commercial and residential facilities?” he questioned.
Asantehene was speaking at a meeting between the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources over the Lands Act 2020.
Buildings in waterways have often disrupted the flow of water, causing perennial flooding in Kumasi.
“Who gives permit for buildings? Why are they granting permits for buildings to be developed in waterways? Is it the Assembly? If so, where is the land officer who committed such an act?” he asked.
“You are unable to demolish these buildings for fear of losing the next elections,” he said.
The Lands Act, 2020 mandates all traditional leaders to properly demarcate their lands before giving them out for development.
The Asantehene wants his sub-chiefs to follow the provision religiously for the benefit of all.
“Before selling your lands, ensure that it is well demarcated and approved by the appropriate authority. The services of professional surveyors must be employed for the purpose. By doing so, there will be a proper lay out of towns”, he emphasized.
