The Ministry of Works and Housing is promising to look into the quality of housing in the country, Sector Minister, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has disclosed.
According to the provisional 2022 Population and Housing Census, the use of unconventional structures such as kiosks and metallic containers as housing units is on the rise and constitute about 21.3% of the country’s housing stock.
Speaking at the release of the 2021 Population and Housing General Report, Mr. Asenso-Boakye said the Ministry of Works and Housing counts prioritise the rich data emanating from the 2021 Population and Housing Census to address the housing challenges in the country to move forward with the sectorial policies and programmes.
“As a first step, we would work with GSS for the estimation of regional and district specific housing deficits that account for variation in household size across the different administrative units”, he explained.
He further said his outfit will contextualize the available statistics and working, to explain the patterns and trends presented, adding, government is prioritising access to affordable housing.
“In this regard, we urge the private sector to utilise this rich data for their market research and decision-making to better serve the housing needs of the population.”
“I urge all stakeholders, especially my friends from the media, civil society organizations and users of statistical data to support efforts of the Ghana Statistical Service in ensuring effective dissemination of the 2021 Population and Housing Census data”, Mr. Asenso-Boakye added
.Meanwhile, from the findings on housing, Government Statistician, Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, said the upward trend in housing deficit since 1960, has been reversed by 33 percent since 2000
