A 66 year-old man has been convicted to 12 months imprisonment by the Asamankese Circuit Court for possessing narcotic drugs contrary to section 31(1) of the Narcotic Control Commission Acts 2020 (Act 1019).
Joseph Agbeteye will serve his sentence in hard labour.
When he appeared before the court, he pleaded guilty to the charge and was convicted on his plea.
According to the Prosecuting Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police, C. T. Apronti, the complainants are police officers from the National Highways Patrol Unit, Accra, while the convict is a farmer at Anoff, a suburb of Nsawam.
He said on October 10, last year, the complainants were on patrol duty on the Nsawam-Adeiso road and decided to stop some vehicles for search.
According to him, during a search on one of the vehicles, the convict was apprehended after the police found on him a slab of plant material suspected to be Indian hemp.
He said after the police concluded investigation, the convict was charged and arraigned.
