Registrar of NTC and Secretary General of AFTRA, Dr Christian Addai-Poku

Registrar of the National Teaching Council (NTC), Dr Christian Addai-Poku, has been elected as the Secretary-General of the Africa Federation of Teaching Regulatory Authorities (AFTRA).

He takes over from Dr Mubanga Ebbe of Zambia who has completed his second term as the Secretary-General for the Federation.

His election took place on Wednesday, June 1 when Ghana hosted the 9th edition of AFTRA’s Teaching and Learning Conference in Accra.

AFTRA is an intergovernmental organisation of the Ministries of Education and national agencies regulating teaching in the 55 member states of the African Union (AU).

It is also a member of the International Forum of Teaching Regulatory Authorities (IFTRA) and the United Nations International Taskforce on Teachers for Education 2030.

As part of its responsibilities and core duties, AFTRA works with the Education Division of the African Union Commission, UNESCO Regional offices and other international firms with special focus on education.

The 9th edition of the conference, which drew speakers, delegates and participants from Africa and other regions, was held under the theme, 'Unpacking Teaching and Learning in Africa for Excellence.'

In an interview with JoyNews prior to his appointment, Dr Addai-Poku said plans are already underway to integrate Information Technology in the education system.

He stated that by the end of June 2022, “we will have a ministerial section where ministers of education will meet and discuss teacher issues across the continent and give advice.”

“For IT enhancement, the National Teaching Council has an online learning platform that teachers go there to learn a lot of things on how they can apply technology in their meeting,” Dr Addai-Poku said on JoyNews’ The Pulse.
