As part of its efforts to reduce sickle cell disease across the country, the Anaq Foundation has taken its awareness creation campaign to Kumasi Senior Technical School's (KSTS).

In the last few months, many schools, worship centers and communities in the Ashanti Region have participated in the campaign to ensure that people are aware of their status.

According to the Foundation, it is high time to make young people more aware of their sickle cell status prior to marriage.

The measure is expected to significantly help mitigate the sickle cell disease outbreak in the country.

Speaking at an event to commemorate Kumasi Senior Technical School's (KSTS) SRC Week celebration, the Foundation's President, Mrs. Ama Nyarko Attafuah Quainoo said it is critical for young people to know their sickle cell status before marrying to reduce the number of sickle cell patients that are born.

The sickness is incurable, according to Mrs. Ama Nyarko Attafuah Quainoo, and patients frequently become ill, putting their families in financial and emotional distress.

Mrs. Attafuah-Quainoo urged the Ghana Education Service and other responsible institutions to allow the Foundation access to all senior high schools so that students will be educated about the condition.

Dr. Cosmos Bimpong, a clinical nutritionist and scientist at the Sermens Herbal Clinic, stated that the negative effects of sickle cell illness are very serious and that youngsters should be educated to prevent partnerships that will result in sickle cell patients.

He mentioned that the problem is irreversible and that the only way to fix it is to pay $200,000 for stem cell treatment.

Dr. Bimpong urged the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to work with the Foundation to reach out to all schools and educate the children.

While praising the Foundation for educating the students about the condition, the school's Headmaster, Mr. Boateng Andrews, called on the government and other philanthropic organisations to help.
