The need for children to be aware of environmental issues is crucial for the sustenance of the ecosystem as they help in solving critical issues of the environment.
Engaging children about environmental degradation like illegal mining has become imperative more than ever.
Recycle Up Ghana, an environmental organization and business incubator is therefore empowering 22 schools nationwide to create environmental awareness.
They have therefore distributed 1,000 trees among these schools to mark Green Ghana day.
The initiative is part of Recycle Up’s Nationwide Waste education campaign NWEC.
Obinkyere Acquah is Business incubation coordinator.
“We seek to empower the youth. The best way to go is to help these young ones to be environmentally conscious.
“We decided to come here and work with and support them in their tree planting,” he said.
A patron at one of the schools, St. Louis Jubilee in Kumasi, Edwin Larbi-Asiedu was happy about the enthusiasm of the pupils towards the exercise.
He said they’ve included fruit trees to enrich the mix.
“Over the years, we’ve been planting a lot of trees. And we’re adding coconut trees,” he said.
Some of the students spoke to Joy News.
“I’ll tell the government to encourage people plant more trees so we get fresh air,” Ama Asantewaa Agyapong Afrifa.
“The trees provide us with fresh, “Mercy Naa Larteley Baddoo said.
