Through the decades, Africa has produced well-known football players that have earned global repute due to their performance and the squad that they belong to.

Didier Drogba

Didier Drogba is a former Ivorian footballer who was known for playing with Chelsea and being the captain of the Ivory Coast national team. He debuted as a pro player in 1998 when he played for the French team Le Mans. He moved to the English Premier League in 2004 where he helped Chelsea win its first league title in 50 years.

Drogba also won the UEFA Champions League in 2012. In 2013, he played for the Turkish team Galatasaray where he scored the winning goal in the Turkish Super Cup final. Drogba also made a name for himself in North America by being a part of the Canadian team Montreal Impact and the US team Phoenix Rising.

Roger Milla

Those who take part in in-play betting for football will probably recognise who Roger Milla is. Milla used to play as a forward and was known to celebrate a goal by going to the corner and dancing. He represented his home country of Cameroon in three FIFA World Cups and holds the record for being the oldest goalscorer in the tournament’s history.

Milla made his pro debut in 1967 for Eclair De Douala. He also played under several French teams while being a part of the Cameroonian national team for international competitions. He retired at the age of 36 in 1988. In 1990, Cameroonian President Paul Biya pleaded with him to come out of retirement to represent the country once more in a World Cup.

Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah is a player for Liverpool as well as the captain of the Egyptian national team. He made his pro debut in 2010 for Al Mokawloon Al Arab, an Egyptian club where he played for two seasons. He moved to Switzerland to play for Basel where he helped the team claim its fifth consecutive title.

The English Premier League noticed his skills and was signed by Chelsea in 2013. During his stint with Chelsea, he was also loaned to Italian teams Fiorentina and Roma. In 2017, he was transferred to Liverpool where he was met with considerable success.

George Weah

George Weah was a Liberian footballer who was widely recognised as one of the best players who never set foot in the World Cup. He made his pro debut in 1985 for Bong Range United. Upon winning several national titles, he was discovered by the Cameroonian national team coach who recommended that he play in Europe.

While in Europe, Weah played for Ligue 1 teams AS Monaco and Paris SG. He also moved to Italy and played for AC Milan. He was awarded the Ballon d’Or, Onze d’Or, and the FIFA World Player of the Year 1995. Weah retired from football in 2003 and got engaged in politics two years later. He got elected as a senator in 2014. In 2017 he became the 25th President of Liberia.
