Malta Guinness Ghana, who are the headline sponsors of the Ghana Women’s Premier League, on Sunday, October 9, held a kick-off ceremony to commence the 2022/23 season.
The beverage company signed a three-year deal with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to become the official face of the women’s top-flight league in Ghana, starting this season.
The kick-off ceremony was held at the Madina Astro Turf prior to the start of the game involving Ridge City and Essiam Socrates.
Despite the heavy rains earlier on, the game went ahead as planned with the kick-off event also being carried.
Essiam Socrates scored three goals in the first half of the game with Helen Alormenu, Ellen Coleman and Frederica Kai Addico netting for the away team.
The game was also dubbed the clash of the debutants as the two clubs were taking to the Women’s Premier League for the first time.
Head coach of the Panthers, Louis Ano-Ampofo admitted his side’s performance in the first 45 minutes was nothing to write home about but promised they will do their homework well in subsequent games.

“We expect to see more of this positive attitude coming through from the ladies. That they have a can-do attitude even when it seems that everything is down, we that they going to still make the fans and the sponsors proud and most especially their teams also proud,” Michael Acheampong, the Marketing Manager, Innovations of Guinness Breweries Ghana Limited told the media after the game.
The Women’s Premier League will head into matchday two over the weekend with games across all two zones.
