A Political Scientist and Democracy & Development Fellow, CDD-Ghana, says the 80 Majority Members of Parliament (MPs) who threatened to boycott government business are in a very difficult position currently.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Dr. John Osae-Kwapong explained that the decision taken by the MPs and the subsequent u-turn puts their political careers at risk.

“The MPs are in a very difficult position now because even having agreed to wait after the meeting with the President … because it looked like you gave us so much hope and now you have taken that hope away. They have to be very cautious in their political career going forward,” he said.

The MPs backtracked on their call for removal of the Finance Minister, Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta until negotiations with the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) is completed after a meeting with President Akufo-Addo.

According to Dr. Osae-Kwapong, the MPs ought to tread cautiously going forward, since their political ambitions are on the line.

It would be recalled that some New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentarians on Tuesday demanded for the government to relieve the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta and the Minister of State in charge of Finance at the Ministry of Finance, Charles Adu Boahen from their positions.

The MPs, numbering about 80, held a press conference on Tuesday to impress the President to take action.

The 80 MPs, threatened to boycott the reading of the 2023 budget if Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta is not sacked.

Mr. Osae-Kwapong had hoped that the MPs would stand their grounds.

“It is quite rare, this was very different, I do not know how long it has been brewing for them to actually decide that they were going to make this public with the President of their own party,” he said.
