The Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini says listening to government's communication on the debt restructuring programme can be confusing.
This, he explained is because the government has not been honest in the information put out in this regard.
According to him, the government initially declined to seek help from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He also cited the assurance, by the President in his address to the nation, of no 'haircut' on investments.
“Sometimes you do not even know what to believe and how to plan when you listen to them (government),” Mr. Suhuyini said.
He noted that it is the confusing nature of the conversation on the debt exchange programme that has resulted in the opposition to it from some stakeholders.
The Tamale North MP stated that the debt exchange programme is not well thought through.
This notwithstanding, he suggested that the programme can be looked at from three perspectives – impact of debt restructuring strategy, how we got here and the way forward.
The legislator said the activities of the Akufo-Addo-led government have vindicated the Minority.
Touching on some tax measures in the 2023 Budget, he stated that the Akufo-Addo-led government has adopted interventions which they opposed during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regime, such as the Value Added Tax.
He also stated that the government has gone back to the reintroduction of the benchmark values.
In a related development, Mr. Alhassan Suhuyini has cautioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) led government to do away with its “arrogant posturing” amidst talks about the debt exchange programme.
Mr Suhuyini stated that government should desist from projecting itself as “knowing it all” and also stop making decisions on behalf of the public without consultation.
“This is where we should all put out patriotic caps on and look at how we can help the government to at least get the staff-level agreement. But we will hope that moving forward, they will shed off that arrogant posturing of knowing it all and taking decisions on our behalf without consulting us and expecting to consult us after they have taken some of these decisions,” he told Samson Larrdy Anyenini.
