An International Relations Analyst, Vladimir Antwi-Danso has said Ghana would be declaring a stand in the Russia-Ukraine war if it aligns with the United States.

According to him, if Ghana wants to play a meaningful role in the new cold war that is unfolding, the proper way to go by it is not to align with the United States of America.

“We must understand what is happening in the context of geopolitics, and we must understand it in the context of the new cold war that is unfolding. Therefore if Ghana is to play a meaningful role, this is not the way to do it by singing the swan song of let's say America. We don't have to do that.”

Mr. Vladimir-Danso’s comment follows Akufo-Addo's request for support from the US to fight terrorism around Ghana’s borders, as he alleged the existence of some Russian forces at the northern border of Ghana.

President Akufo-Addo said Burkina Faso had brought in Russian Wagner forces to help the insurgency in the country and the forces are being compensated with a mine in Southern Burkina.

“Today, Russian mercenaries are on our northern border. Burkina Faso has now hinted at an arrangement to go along with Mali and incline the Wagner forces there. I believe a mine in Southern Burkina is being allocated them as a form of payment for their services. Prime Minister of Burkina Faso in the last days has been in Moscow and to have them operating on our northern border is particularly distressing for us in Ghana,” the President said.

President Akufo-Addo, therefore, appealed to the US for support to fight possible security threats at the northern border very close to where Burkina Faso has stationed the Russian forces.

“It’s important that we bring that matter to your notice and see to what extent we can engage you as a reliable partner in the pushback of those forces,” he added.

Speaking on Joy FM's TopStory on Thursday evening, the Dean of Academic Affairs for Ghana Armed Forces Staff College further stated that the comment made by President Akufo-Addo can bring the cold war to the doorstep of Ghana.

“...somehow, the comments by President can bring the cold war to the doorstep of Ghana. The four pillars of our foreign policy must guide us. We are one of the main pillars of Pan-Africanism. “Anything concerning Africa, we are at the forefront. Then good governance, non-alignment, and then multilateralism,” he said.

He noted that the government must understand the geopolitics within this area before making a decision since a mistake can be made if the analysis is not well done.

“...so if we are done aligning, then we should understand the geopolitics within our area. If something is happening, we must understand, we must let our listeners understand. Within the French-speaking countries, we see that there's a gradual divorce of the countries from Francophone or French kind of hegemony and it pronounces itself very well in Mali.

"Guinea has followed, now Burkina Faso is following and if we don't understand these trends then we may make a mistake by analysing what is happening,” he said.
