Pupil enrolment in Ayeduase R/C Primary and Kindergarten is falling due to lack of amenities.
According to the head teacher, Ms. Matilda Ackom, the school lacks sanitary facilities, and regulatory road signs to protect the pupils from danger.
The situation has therefore forced parents to transfer their wards to other schools.
Speaking at the school’s graduation, speech, and prize-giving day, Ms. Ackom was worried the school is losing many of its brightest students.
“We don’t have a kitchen and toilet facility for which one was started but it has not been completed. Because of this, we decided to organize these programs to create awareness and influence the school’s enrollment,” she said.
Prof. Joshua Ayarkwa of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology beseeched old students of Ayeduase R/C to focus and commit to the progress of their old school.
“Old students are targeting only the secondary schools as their alma-mata. Meanwhile, when we talk about the school that grooms us, that taught us how to read and write, it is the basic school. So I call on the elderly to look back and consider their schools and provide the basic things such as school infrastructure and the basic things the teachers need to educate the pupil,” he said.
The event was under the theme: “Building a solid foundation for our children, the pivotal role of teachers and the community”.
Public Relations Officer for the Ghana Education Service at the Oforikrom Municipal Assembly, Padre Pio Owusu Peprah believes that extensive engagements with stakeholders can address enrolment issues.
“I humbly request that all the various stakeholders should come together in all aspects; right from the admission process to curriculum designing to its proper implementation to help address several problems like an increase in drop-out rates, and unskilled students.
“The role of the Government in ensuring adequate funding and policy support cannot be over-emphasized,” he said.
Meanwhile, outstanding pupils and teachers were given various prizes.
