US-based Ghanaian musician, Fritz Oakley is of the view that some entertainers think just because they have a large following in their home country, they can pull a massive crowd overseas.
Speaking in an interview with JoyNews’ Becky on the USA series of E-Vibes, Fritz said if Ghanaian musicians want to pull huge crowds as they do in Ghana, they will have to go further in promotion.
According to him, even though Wizkid is a big act, the organizers had to go extra mile with promotions because they wanted to reach a bigger audience.
“In my perspective, people assume that just because you have made a name in Ghana or like a big artiste who has over 5 million followers on Instagram in Ghana, like he or she is huge and has won awards and for example in Ghana, they can be like I am doing a show in 2 weeks at the national theatre or conference Centre so pull up and people show up. Here, first of all, you are in a different country competing with the likes of Beyonce and Asake, Wizkid and all these people,” he added.
"I think the mentality has to change, just because you are coming from Ghana does not mean your music or you are doing the music for Ghanaians. When that whole idea comes into place, you will realise that you have to go extra further. At the end of the day, you are competing with people who have become international household names. Just because you are big in Ghana doesn’t mean when you get here people. No, I see most of the artistes here walk up and down here regularly but in Ghana is a completely different ball game together. For me, ultimately it has to be the promotion.”
He further added that Ghanaians must have a change of mindset and support their own.
“I have a lot of Ghanaian events flop here as well. It all boils down to promotion. The mindset has to change.”
Fritz, at age 19, began his musical career when he emerged as the winner of the maiden edition of the Voice Factory music reality show in 2009.
After a 12-year hiatus from the Ghanaian music scene, Fritz rebranded as a gospel musician under the name Oakley.
Fritz enjoyed fame when he launched his music career with many songs including ‘Me do wo’ featuring Guru.
The E-Vibes show strives to evoke memories through the setting of the interview and their rise, the memories they made on their way to the top with the hope that their unique stories will help shape the younger generation.
