An aide to ex President John Mahama, Felix Kwakye Ofosu says it is only when the Akufo-Addo-led administration is voted out of power that the fight against illegal mining will be won.
According to the politician, President Akufo-Addo has failed to indict some persons in his administration who have been found complicit in 'galamsey'.
It will be recalled that the former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI), Prof Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, in an interview with the state broadcaster GBC, disclosed that many top officials in government were involved in 'galamsey' and that the rot went as high as the seat of government, Jubilee House.
Prof Boateng further insisted that some of these individuals supervised his ousting in order to continue their unscrupulous activities.
Following that assertion made by Prof Boateng, President Akufo-Addo issued directives that the Ghana Police Service investigates the former Minister’s allegation.
But Mr Ofosu, while speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, said that he did not believe that the directives given by the President will yield any substantive outcome.
He explained that the President had not shown any commitment to dealing with perpetrators of wrongdoings that have been brought to light.
Mr Ofosu told the host, Sampson Lardy Anyenini, “The President has huffed and puffed, as and when it is convenient, he has engaged in some Public Relations gimmicks and made commitments he never intended to keep.
“So I don’t expect that anything much will come out of it, except for the fact that this would appear to vindicate the positions we’ve taken that the reasons why galamsey has flourished is that from the highest levels of the Akufo-Addo, Bawumia government, they have support.
"And perhaps, the only way to ensure that the fight is won is to see the back of this government electorally come 2024,” he said.
