A committee tasked by the Ministry of Local Government to investigate the Kejetia Market fire has started work, with a tour of the market to access first-hand information on its management, including the area affected by the fire.
Management of the facility, led by Edmund Kofi Duffour, took the team through the market.
The committee, inaugurated on Wednesday is chaired by Professor Theophilus Adjei-Kumi of the Department of Construction Technology and Management at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
Other members include; Private Legal Practitioner, Francis Koffie, Real Estate Consultant, Kofi Ampong and Deputy Director General for NADMO, Daniel Kwaku Denteh. Emelia Agyebeng Botchway serves as Secretary to the committee.
Deputy Minister for the Ministry of Local Government, Osei Bonsu Amoah spoke about the composition of the committee.
All committee members on their first day of work were present at the Kejetia Market.
Together with a team from the Kumasi City Markets Limited, they went to parts of the market affected by the fire.
Other areas including fire installations and CCTV rooms were among areas of interest.
The Committee refused to speak of their impressions on the fact-finding mission.
The committee’s terms of reference include inquiring into the circumstances of, and establishing the facts leading to the fire outbreak.
They would also inquire into matters incidental or reasonably related to the cause of the fire outbreak and also inquire into the efficient operation, maintenance and management of the market.
The Ministry expects the committee to submit a report on their findings and give recommendations with a view to preventing future disasters.
