The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fiifi Kwetey, has advised two state institutions not to compromise their mandate in discharging their duties in a bid to please the ruling party.
According to him, the Supreme Court and the Electoral Commission (EC) must ensure they deliver their duties without biases.
Speaking at a Thanksgiving Rally in Assin North constituency, he said, “Tell the NPP you will not sell your soul and your constituency will not go down that is the message that Ghana needs to hear.
“It’s the message the Electoral Commission must hear, don’t sell your soul and let the nation go down it’s the message the Supreme Court must hear don’t sell your soul and let the nation go down.”
He asked the Supreme Court and the EC to emulate the electorates of the Assin North and reject any attempt by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to influence them.
On his part, the Assin North MP, James Gyakye Quayson, expressed his appreciation to his constituents for standing their grounds to elect him as their representative devoid of money and souvenirs by the NPP to subvert their will.
He seized the opportunity to criticise the blatant display of voting buying in the constituency ahead of the by-election.
Background
Mr Quayson is standing trial for forgery and perjury.
He is also accused of deceiving a public officer and knowingly making a false declaration when he filed nominations to contest in the 2020 election when he had not renounced his Canadian citizenship.
However, he has filed a motion on notice at the High Court for a stay of proceedings, pending an appeal.
