As Independent Power Producers (IPPs) meet today to strategise on how to retrieve about $2.2 billion debt owed by the government, the Institute for Energy Security (IES), is impressing the government to give in the strongest word of committing to settling the debt to the IPP’s.

Reacting to the development, the Executive Director of IES, Nana Amaosi VII, urged government to be transparent with the Power Producers in other to win their trust.

“I think what government can do is by saying we owe you this much, and we are making an attempt to pay you. However, going forward, we are ensuring there is no backlog in your payment because we have a consistent and reliable scheme of revenue to manage obligations with you”.

“This is enough assurance and good relief to them”, he stated. 

The IPPs had earlier threatened to stop supplying power to the national grid if the government fails to fulfill part of its obligations to them.

It took the intervention of the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana to stop the planned power cut to the national grid, after a promise to settle some of the debt.

Today’s meeting by the IPPs aims at addressing the ongoing issue of non-payment by the government with respect to the consumption of electricity.
