Renowned Kenyan lawyer and activist, Professor Patrick Lumumba, has eulogized former President John Evans Atta Mills for his prestigious service as President of Ghana, despite serving a short term.
Describing the late President as an epitome of good leadership, Professor Lumumba said his service before his demise proves that leadership is not about longevity in office.
He was speaking at the 10th JEA Mills Commemorative Lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi.
The 10th John Evans Atta Mills Commemorative Lecture is to espouse the service and dedication of John Evans Atta Mills as the 3rd President of the Fourth Republic.
Keynote speaker, Professor P.L.O Lumumba, praised the former President for his service.
According to him, the commemorative lecture comes at a time when political leadership is "synonymous to dishonesty."
Describing the former President as a prestigious leader, Professor Lumumba said, “History records will continue to do so until it is otherwise proven that he was the shortest-serving president of Ghana.
"His footprint shows that it is not how long you serve that matters but how well you serve. Longevity in and out of itself is not what makes one great but the quality of service,” he added.
Former President John Mahama also praised the late Atta Mills for his dedication to the country.
According to him, the current crop of leadership is refusing to emulate the humility of Professor Mills.
John Mahama described the former President as an honest person.
“He was a man of integrity and a man who did not need 1 million dollars sitting in his home to survive as president.” he added.
