Many children in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality of the Western North region are abandoning the classroom to engage in illegal mining.
According to the municipal education office, the development is affecting basic education in the area.
Mensin Gold Bibiani Limited is making efforts to improve the trend with the introduction of a highly-subsidised education at its basic school at Bibiani.
The Bibiani-Anwhianso Bekwai area has been prone to illegal mining for years. With time, many of its young people are attracted to artisanal illegal mining.
The Ghana Education Service says the development is taking the young ones from the classroom.
On the back of this, the company is using its model school to improve education in the Bibiani-Anwhiaso-Bekwai municipality.
Mensin Gold is subsidising education and supporting teachers to improve the standard of education in Bibiani township.
