Motorists who use the Accra-Tema Motorway are excited about the demolition of two out of the eight booths on the expressway.
According to the drivers, this action will enhance the free flow of traffic and help prevent further accidents.
The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) commenced the much-awaited demolition exercise this morning in an effort to enhance traffic flow and mitigate the risk of road accidents.
The action comes on the back of public outcry following several dastardly accidents on the stretch involving the tollbooths.
Speaking to the site engineer in charge of the demolition, Samuel Idan, he explained the scope of the project.
“The next phase of the work is for instance we’re going to finish the demolishing work in the next two hours. Once we’re done with the demolishing works, we’re going to start installing the barricades.
"The barricade we’re installing now is not for the driveway though, but it’s just for our scope of work and then our construction area.
“When we’re done, we’re going to install the barricades for a straight path from Aflao towards Accra and from Accra towards Tema. The barricades we’re going to install initially are just temporal,” he told JoyNews’ Carlos Calony.
Meanwhile, some road users say the demolition is a welcome sight.
“I’m very happy the booth is being destroyed because the booth is in the lane. It has caused the loss of more than a hundred people’s lives and properties.
"So I’m very happy that they’ve come to destroy this booth. I’m very very happy. The booths in the other lanes too need to be destroyed,” one road user said.
Another was hopeful that with the booths finally gone, the number of accidents on the stretch would reduce.
“It’s good. If they’re able to do all these things it will prevent the accident and the traffic when you’re going you can get the chance to go at a speed. So I think that it is good that should do this thing,” he said.
