Former Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, has urged President Akufo-Addo to declare a state of economic emergency.
According to him, the economic situation the country finds itself in is very grave and would need the collaboration of all stakeholders to revive the economy.
He was speaking ahead of the reading of the 2024 budget statement and economic plan to be delivered on the floor of parliament by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta later this morning.
This presentation aims to outline strategies for revenue generation and policies to address current economic challenges.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Haruna Iddrisu stated that current suggestions of the introduction of new taxes in the yet-to-be-read 2024 budget statement is not the way to spur private sector driven economic growth.
He noted that taking into consideration Ghana’s damaged economic scorecard under the Akufo-Addo administration, it would only take a miracle for the NPP controlled government to rescue the economy.
“You don’t run an economy based on a miracle, that’s why you went to an IMF. And you don’t run an economy hoping that some session will provide the impetus for you to change the course,” he said.
He stated that the President has to own up to the economic challenges the country is facing under his government and seek help.
“We do have a problem and I think it’s about time the president accepts and declares an economic state of emergency and look around for people to help him with ideas to walk the country out of the crisis,” he said.
