A Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah Asante, says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) might struggle to retain seats in Greater Accra in the upcoming polls.
His comments follow some incumbent Members of Parliament (MP) losing their candidature in the recently held parliamentary primaries.
According to him, if nothing is done about it, the incumbent MPs losing their right to represent the party in the recently held polls might be replicated in the general elections.
He explained that Greater Accra was a swing region hence more efforts must be channelled into campaigning for the new candidates. This way, the electorate would be familiar with them.
Speaking to JoyNews, he said “If we look at southern Ghana the feeling towards the party in terms of their performance is not that good enough, so they need to add their game and make sure that whatever they have lost in terms of support they will be able to regain.”
He stressed that the NPP's failure to honour promises made to citizens might bite back at them in the polls, as the electorate would want to try someone new, likely someone from the opposition.
