According to the 2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey conducted by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), a higher percentage of Ghanaian women than men believe that domestic violence against women is acceptable.
The survey shows that 19 percent of women (compared to 16 percent of men) consider a husband justified in hitting or beating his wife.
Various reasons were cited to justify such behaviour, including neglecting the children, going out without informing the husband, engaging in arguments, refusing sexual intercourse, or burning food during cooking.
The report further highlights that neglecting the children is the most commonly cited reason among women for justifying wife beating.
It said that 13 percent of women hold this view compared to 10 percent of men.
